Another Church Creek Time Trial is in the books. The collaboration between ABRT and Phase Cycling for this year’s event was great and big thanks to the volunteers who support this event. We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks to the competitors who came out on a very hot day to test their skills against this true, speed time trial. The results in PDF form are posted on the event page along with podium pictures (mostly Juniors). Get ready for the late summer edition on August 18. Look for the bike reg page opening soon.
Now that spring is here as indicated passing of Daylight Savings Time, the Saturday Ride shifts to 9am until after Memorial Day when it will shift to 8am. With Daylight Savings Time, we again have enough daylight to reconvene the Tuesday Evening World Championships. On March 20 and 27 we have enough to do one loop and on April 3 with sunset at 7:30 we can do the full ride. Get ready!
At the 2017 MABRA Awards night, Bobby – The Baltimore Bullet – Phillips was awarded the MABRA Lifetime Achievement Award. We’re proud to have Bobby as a long time member of ABRT. Well deserved. He received a signed letter from USA Cycling outlining his contributions.
On behalf of USA Cycling, I write in recognition of your lifetime of contributions to the Mid-Atlantic Bicycle Racing Association (MABRA) and your truly remarkable career in the sport of cycling. With a cycling career spanning more than 60 years, you have left an indelible mark on our sport. I was thrilled to learn that after decades of excellence as a competitor, you are still active and racing today. Your message is one of resilience_ and dogged perseverance, which I truly hope is heard by generations of bike racers to come. The foundation for the sport of cycling you have built in MABRA serves as a roadmap for cycling involvement nationwide. This foundation includes:
• Organizing the Turkey Day Criterium for more than 25 years
• Multi-time Masters National Champion across various disciplines
• Induction into T-Town Track Cycling Hall of Fame in 2016
• Two-time National Best All-Round Rider
• Service on the USCF Board of Directors
Your commitment and dedication to the sport deserves to be recognized and honored. It is my heartfelt desire that you continue to ride and race for years to come, and I look forward to seeing you at coming USA Cycling events. Congratulations on your success and best wishes on all of your future endeavors.
My Best Regards,
Derek Bouchard Hall President & CEO
Are you a local cyclist that is interested in stepping you game up? ABRT is a group of accomplished riders who train and race together throughout the Mid Atlantic region (MABRA) and are always looking for cyclists who want to improve their group skills and compete in cycling events, such as road races, time trials, cyclocross races and local grand fondos. While we are a racing team, racing is not mandatory and we do have a number of members who like to train to keep at top form and enjoy the competitive environment of group rides. We also enjoy various after ride social events and non-competitive rides throughout the season.
“ABRT has been a great experience for me. I joined in 2007 after riding recreationally for many years because I wanted to ride with racing cyclists so I could get faster and learn about group riding and racing. Yes, I got dropped a lot on the Saturday ride initially, but the ABRT members and the group rides taught me how be smart about conserving energy, riding smart in a group and racing tactics. I have matured greatly as a cyclist in the years since thanks to my association with ABRT. I’ve also met and ridden with some awesome people throughout the years.”
–Alex Pline, ABRT President
The team of Captain Sue McQuiston, Ainhoa Perez-Diez and Dori Buckethal was a powerhouse duo or trio in most races in MABRA in 2017. They worked tirelessly as a team to set up one another, which kept the other teams guessing who would get the win on any particular day. In fact another team commented after yet another win that it was like ground hog day!
At the Masters National Championships in June, Ainhoa and Dori won their criterium races, capping off a hugely successful spring racing season for the team.”Two of our Pactimo sponsored Elite Women’s teams won their Masters Criterium Championship races in June 2017. Ainhoa Perez-Diez (45+) and Dori Bucketful (35+). They also both also placed very well in the Road Race with Ainhoa 2nd (44+) and Dori 4th (35+). In addition, Ainhoa also placed well enough in the Time Trial to win the Best All Around (BAR) rider in the 45+ category.
To date this year in addition to their Nationals results, Ainhoa had eight wins, notably in the Jefferson Cup Road Race in Charlottesville, VA and the Navy Yard Criterium in Philadelphia against a very tough field, the MABRA 45+ Criterium Championships, the Giro del Cielo stage race (pro/1/2) and the Page Valley Road Race (1/2/3). Team Captain Sue McQuiston had nine wins including the MABRA 35+ Criterium Championship (and MABRA 35+ BAR) and Dori Buckethal had one win in addition to her National Championship.
We thank Pactimo for the great clothing sponsorship, we could not do it without the generous contribution to the Elite Women’s Team. The team has been especially happy with the women’s specific skinsuit designs as well as the custom stars and stripes and MABRA designs to celebrate their accomplishments.
The 2017 Edition of the AACX at South River Farm brought an exciting, new and challenging course by adding a new hill section in the woods, siting the new run up from last year immediately out of a corner (no one rode it!) and reversing the course direction. A little rain on Friday also made the course much more challenging than in the past.
Elite Women on the Run Up
Lap times were about the same, but the grassy area slogs were greatly reduced. There were several exciting sprint finishes – remember to keep sprinting until the line and check to see if someone is right behind you before you sit up!
Thanks to everyone who came out to race and to all the volunteers who make the event happen, and to sponsors Parvilla Cycles, CryoAnnapolis, Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods, SpeedSleev Products and vendors Acme Pie Co., 1562 Roastery and JavacruiserMoco.
Jeff Travis and Race Works Gruppetto and the USAC officials did a great job getting races started and scored on time. The 2017 Results are uploaded to USA Cycling and the Live Scored results by field are available on the Race Works Site and you can download a PDF file of the results with lap times.
Hope to see you all next year for an even better event.
There are some new surprises for the course, the weather is looking great and you can preride the course after 4pm on Friday. Register NOW!
Thanks to everyone who came out today. The final results are here: 2017 CCTT2 Results
We had a professional photographer on the course name Ted Morgan and he will post all of the pictures on his Flickr site full resolution for free downloads for non commercial use.
Pictures of podiums (sorry many competitors just did not stick around after getting their medals so we were not able to get group pictures):
